So, You’re Interested in Becoming a Baby Sleep Coach?
Welcome to Tiny Transitions. I’m Courtney Zentz, the founder, and I’m here to walk you through how I became a Certified Baby & Toddler Sleep Consultant back in 2015, long before this career was in the spotlight, and what I wish I had known before diving in. Since then, I’ve doubled my business year over year, spoken for major corporations and brands, and mentored over 250 other sleep consultants worldwide. But make no mistake: this isn’t a “Field of Dreams” scenario. Taking a course, often costing several thousand dollars, doesn’t mean clients will start knocking down your door. This is a business, and it requires that mindset from the beginning. Let me share what I’ve learned so you can pursue this path with clarity, not just a high-ticket coaching pitch and a generic Facebook group.
Lesson #1: Understanding the Term Certified Baby & Toddler Sleep Coach
The term “certified” in this industry isn’t regulated. There’s no governing body overseeing sleep coach credentials. My husband, a CFO, could technically take a few online modules and become a “certified” sleep consultant tomorrow, no hands-on experience, just theory. Would you want him to sleep train your baby? I didn’t think so. And that was me at the beginning, underprepared and unaware, and I was literally told ‘fake it until you make it’ – relying on a few friends I met during the training and paying other Sleep Consultants to help me until I felt confident in what I was doing. Now, let me be clear, this work is non-clinical, and I was prepared to support families, to a degree, but I wasn’t prepared for all the in-between, the what-if’s and the how-tos that came up now after working with thousands of families privately in the past 10 years.
When I started, there were only two major programs available. I won’t name them here, but suffice it to say they were expensive, sales-driven, and came with unrealistic promises. I paid $9,000 to join one, based on a salesperson’s promise (who earned a $1,000 commission) that I could make $10,000+ in my first quarter. That’s not technically false, but it’s highly unrealistic. Even worse, when I stopped paying, I was no longer considered “certified.” It was just sleep knowledge and zero mentorship, business education, aside from a text file of old blogs I was upsold at certification, which I learned is the fastest way to sink your SEO, by the way.
Out of 24 consultants in my cohort, more than half closed their businesses within the first year, and many others soon after. Shockingly, they are almost all still listed on the certifying website as active, with dead links…yikes. I’ve since consulted for that same organization and still offer free business education to its current consultants. Why? Because I believe in community over competition. We are doing meaningful, life-changing work in the postpartum space. Today, I proudly serve on the board of the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants, where we’re working to create a true governing body to set a gold standard in this field. As the need for Baby & Toddler sleep coaches grows, and the postpartum overwhelm grows, the work we are doing is amazing, but the lack of regulation and the inability to regulate is a hard pill for me to swallow.
Lesson #2: The Sleep Coach Certification is the “Easy” Part; Running the Business is the Challenge for Most
When I got certified, I was still working full-time as a Marketing Executive at a Fortune 500 company. I used vacation days to travel for training, got a firehose of information, one monthly group call, and a “business-in-a-box” that was anything but useful. I had to start from scratch. I chose the name Tiny Transitions because I knew I wanted a brand that could grow, whether I stayed in sleep consulting, moved into lactation, postpartum doula work, or expanded into adult sleep. The name had flexibility, just like the business I was building.
Since launching my mentorship program in 2023, I’ve supported over 239 sleep consultants and entrepreneurs. And here’s what I’ve found: most people don’t fail because they’re bad at sleep coaching; they fail because they don’t understand how to run a business.
They don’t know:
- How to build a strong, SEO-optimized website (not the template you’re given by your certifying agency).
- What tech is essential vs. optional, and how to integrate it all.
- How to protect their brand legally (trademarks, service marks, contracts).
- How to find clients through organic reach, paid ads, partnerships, and social media.
Most aspiring sleep consultants are amazing at their craft and bring a wealth of knowledge from nursing, teaching, OT, PT, or outside fields, as I did. However, many have limited time, especially if they want to work part-time. You need to know how many hours you realistically have and what level of income or growth is feasible within that time. Success doesn’t happen by accident; it’s time-blocked and intentional.
Here is a template to do that first, if you are thinking about a career as a sleep coach. It’s important to be honest about how much time you will have to work on a business and achieve the results you desire that meet your personal and professional goals.
Lesson #3: What Personality is Best for Being a Certified Sleep Coach
Let’s be honest: this is a sales job. Not in the sleazy way, but in the confidence, communication, and client-relations way. Most certification programs make it seem like there’s an application process, but if you can pay, you’re in. It’s a transaction, not a partnership. The results? That’s on you.
This career is best suited for type-A, outgoing individuals who are comfortable being seen as the expert, having tough conversations, and showing up consistently. You’ll talk to tired, emotional parents. You’ll need to manage varying parenting styles, philosophies, and personalities. You’ll have to market yourself, build referral networks, get on podcasts, show up on social media, and write content that ranks.
Introverts often struggle here because they underestimate how visible and interactive this career requires you to be.
After 11 years, multiple board positions, national speaking engagements, and hundreds of sleep consultants mentored, I’ve seen the highs and lows of this industry. And I still believe it’s one of the most rewarding, life-changing careers out there. So, if you are doing your research to become a Certified Sleep Coach, either as a stand-alone career or as an add-on to a postpartum profession, understand the methodology, structure, support, and mentorship you get on the business and curriculum side before you invest. Talk to each organization and ask questions about their program. Aren’t sure what to ask? Start with us, and we will break it down, then you can take what you learn from us, interview other heads of program, and make the best decision for your goals.
Curious to Understand How Much Baby & Toddler Sleep Coaches Can Earn?
Earning potential, like any service-based sales, is about how much time you plan to dedicate to the career and the positioning of the programs you wish to sell. I have Certified Sleep Consultants on my team who only prefer to do 1:1 Private Coaching, where there are others who prefer just 30 or 60-minute ask me anything session and an in-home overnight. Once you find what works for you, we focus on how to scale that to maximize your earning potential while fueling your passion for the work.
Through our exclusive Mentorship Program, you’ll receive hands-on training with me 1:1 and The Slumber Squad. Over 12 months, our work study program allows you to train, earn and learn, then at the end of 12 months, join the team and work to support parents under the Tiiny Transitions brand, or take everything you learn about business and sleep and start or grow your own agency, no strings attached and still Certified under one of the most reputable brands in the US. Whether you’re just starting or scaling, we’d love to support your journey. At Tiny Transitions, the work we do is truly life-changing for the families we serve and the coaches who guide them.
